Satellite TV FAQ - Dish Network vs Direct TV

FAQ

What exactly is satellite tv?
Satellite TV is a way of delivering TV pictures and sound via a satellite. Direct broadcast satellite, or DBS, beams hundreds of digital-quality video and audio channels to your home via satellite.

What are the advantages of satellite tv over cable?
In many ways satellite TV is better than cable. The service is available nationally, including remote areas. Prices between satellite and cable companies are comparable. However, satellite TV offers far more channels than cable.

Satellite tv delivers a 100% digital signal, so you get a crystal clear picture and CD quality sound.

Hard drives are now being incorporated within satellite receivers so you can record your favorite movies and programs without the use of video tape.

By taking advantage of special promotions, you can be up and running very quickly and for next to nothing.

How do I know if I can get satellite tv?
To receive the satellite TV system signal, you must have a clear view of the southern sky, which usually isn't a problem. Tall buildings, trees or anything that blocks this line of vision may affect how you receive your transmissions.

Who are the major satellite tv service providers?
There are TWO major satellite tv service providers: Dish Network and DirecTV.

What's the difference between Dish Network and DirecTV satellite?
Both Dish Network and Direct TV are comparable as far as quality of service and pricing.

The main difference is in programming choices. Dish Network offers more international channels and more adult programming choices such as TeN (The Erotic Network) and Extasy.

Direct TV offers 55 pay-per-view channels where Dish Network has about 20 pay-per-view channels.

Personal Video Recording ability (the ability to record programs to your satellite receiver hard drive as well as pause and rewind live tv) is included with Dish Network's monthly subscription. This is a separate service with Direct TV - see Ultimate TV.

DirecTV has exclusive distribution rights to NFL Sunday Ticket.
